Police Lax in communication!

G'day Everyone!

Why are Police Departments in the Rochester, NY area and in the DC Metro so weak in training their officers in an effort to learn Sign Language? Just because Rochester, NY and Washington, DC Metro area have a great population for deaf people, it makes no sense for police departments for treating the deaf community like A.G. Bell suggests "treat the deaf like they were hearing". It's shameful and frightening.

Lately, I've been alerted to a story that was on the Rnews channel. Here's the link and yes it has an article about it since it's non-CC web video: http://www.rnews.com/mediaplayer/players/wmplayerlite.aspx?sid=61455

Now, for some time Ridor has been saying that police are very evil since the police culture won't learn sign language. But, don't avoid the police. Especially if you've been stopped for any reason.

Presently, it's been a never ending battle for the deaf community to encourage the police departments to make Sign Language a mandatory training requirement. If police officers learn every other language in the hearing community, then why not learn SIGN LANGUAGE as well?
We have been trying to encourage the police department to be more friendly and learning sign language would promote the cultural understand between the deaf and police.

But should a lawsuit happens in which the deaf community have an oversight of a police department to insure all the officers learn sign language? I hope not. It's the last thing we should ever have to do.

My hope is that police departments will learn Sign Language before a tragic misunderstand happens that will inflict a lot of lives very badly.

Salute to Nick Vera for the tip!

Crime wave hits in DC Metro for Deaf Residents Near Gallaudet!

G'day Everyone!

I was up late at night when I got alerted to a fast breaking news story happening near the campus of Gallaudet University area.

here's the Washington Post article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/29/AR2008052903634.html?hpid=sec-metro

Scary to say, this hurts these students who are living off campus in these houses. Crime is up high. Sadly to say, will students move to the campus and dorms? I don't know.

So, if they can afford to live in these houses, It would be an investment to get an alarm system!
I am surprised and concerned for several friends who live in one of these houses. I'm hope that they are ok . Please pray for these students.

As 8th street area gets worse, crime may be going up higher. I have personally learned of a friend that been mugged in the last few weeks. Nobody is not yet dead yet, but how much of a desperate criminal will take a chance on killing a deaf resident? That is very highly possible. I worry that may happen sooner or later.

My hope is that the DC METRO police better be on the job and catch these criminals!

Sorenson Boycott Battle?

G'day Everyone.

Right now I'm sitting here with a puzzled look on my face. I have a nice Sorenson VP 200 machine with dials phone numbers, not IP numbers.

Then I'm picking up this web page which is spilling out across the 'net in the emails:

http://blog.deafread.com/sorenson-petition/petition/

As far as I could see before I got my VP 200, I've seen VP 100s where you had to call Sorenson VP 100s via an IP address.

Heck, I've seen some VP 100s and VP 200 have an ability to call both an IP address and the normal 10 digit phone numbers.

My current VP 200 does the whole 10 digit number but not IP address. So that's odd. Does it prevent me from dialing a IP address? That's something of an experiment I may want to try later with my current VP.

Having experienced 3 years ago that D-linksys VP system does not work with Sorenson VP system, I had missed out on a wonderful job opportunity. I would, in fact, make a statement that Sorenson needs, not only to provide 10 digit numbers to ALL of their VP 100s and VP 200 clients and end the VoIP address, but also allow access to other different VP providers as well.

Clearly to say: If hearing people can talk on land line phone lines to Cell Phone users (and vice versa), then we, the Deaf Community, seek the same opportunity that we should be able to use a VP system that has no discrimination of VP providers and be able to communicate with the entire deaf community and a system of relay services.

Equal access promotes Equal rights of everyone between the deaf and hearing communities.

But if Sorenson is making it clear that we can only communicate with other Sorenson users, then that's wrong. Why be limited? In the age of the TTY machines, we could dial 10 digit numbers.

Now in the age of the VideoPhones, we should have that same access as well for everyone.
Sorenson must end it's "exclusive restriction". We shouldn't have to buy two or more different systems just because our friends have those products. We should be able to communicate anywhere!

If you feel that this petition is needed to be passed around, then consider to sign it. Otherwise, I think we ought to have Gallaudet stop construction on the Sorenson building until Sorenson gives us total access to everywhere we need to communicate with. (agree or disagree on that if you like).

Till next time:

Deaf Lotto Scam Alert Notice!

G'day Everyone.

There's important news on the Gallaudet Daily Digest. It's important that everyone reads this and be very aware:

http://pr.gallaudet.edu/dailydigest/?id=13387

Several of my deaf friends have fallen prey to this scam and are in the process of seeking legal advice in hopes of recovering their finances.

There's also been an e-mail scam that has been going around from various places of asking people to submit info or wire money in order to get money. At most times, I've referred them to Homeland Security fraud division.

Also, be aware that someone has been doing an "AIM Crush alert." an AIM CRUSH alert means that "someone" likes you and sets up a notice on your IM and sends you a link to go to that site to find out who that person (the secret lover). But I advise people to put the person's IM on spam and block it.

Whatever happens, be smart and be safe on the 'net!

NTID and so on.

G'day Everyone!

I'm still following the A.G. Bell Dorm controversy that's still going on in the following web page:
http://orangebrownrit.blogspot.com/

They have been very helpful in detailing of what's happening on the Campus of RIT / NTID. Though, Alan Hurwitz has backed down and is holding off any major decision he makes, I believe he will personally set up discussions with the Alumnus when we all gather for the NTID 40th Reunion.

I'm behind a bit in my reading on the Orange and Brown Coalition, but the information is excellent! So hopefully things will remain in a positive direction. I hope no major decisions will be made until everyone has had a chance to hear and speak about it at the NTID 40th Reunion.

As I will keep encouraging fellow alumni to please visit www.NTID.edu/alumni for reunion information. Please use that website and register before June 1st!! Time is running out!
Some of you may not have hotel and may have to opt for the dorms. From what I've heard, most of the hotels are booked in the Rochester area.

A fellow alumni visited NTID/RIT this past weekend during it's graduation ceremony for his niece. He has told me that the RIT campus and it's surrounding area has CHANGED. He didn't say how much but we should all be prepared to be BUG EYED and bring plenty of film (for cameras) and extra digi chips for the digicameras. I think we'll be doing a lot of jaw dropping about the campus when we see it.

29 days to go. Time to plan and time to be ready.

Anyone who's driving up through Route 15 from the south through Williamsport, PA need to take extra patience of driving in my area. The are parts of I-80, I-180, and Route 15 that is presently under a state of road construction. Some lanes of traffic is restricted to one lane each way. Though I have good news to tell (and I should have said it ages ago!): Williamsport, PA has a NEW Market Street Bridge and a easy way to get on I-180 to follow Route 15 north. Also, a lot of construction is happening on Route 15 near the NY/PA border area so please be careful.

Hope everyone comes to the reunion. If you can't, Plan on 2013 for the 45th Reunion!

Memorial Day 2008

G'day Everyone!

Welcome to the unofficial start of Summer 2008. Summer is really a few weeks away. But some of us, even Gas companies can't help of calling out the unofficial start of Summer as of today.

It's Memorial Day 2008. Vacation season starts. Usually it means that many people will jump into their cars and drive somewhere for a "vacation". But what it really means is that Big Oil Companies and Credit Card Companies will be HAPPY to know that you are spending those hard earned money, including your Economic Stimulus checks, on your "vacation". With that in mind, you are just delaying the effect to have to pay for your vacation by working more hours.

Having gone down to Maryland to visit my friend, Harold Tritt's funeral, I could see the effect of gas prices having an impact on everything from hotels to food. It wasn't a time for fun, it was an emotional time of remembrance. The funeral was a great send-off for Harold.

I want to share with you some interesting facts that I found out. Not only that I have read my own local paper and the Washington Post, but I've a friend who's in the gas business. He told me that years ago, you could make a profit if you owned a gas station. Today, you are trying to make ends meet for yourself if you run a service station because oil companies are trying to squeeze out every drop of pennies out of these station owners. When owners complain (as my friend has) to the gas dealers, their response: "Don't bother telling us you are shutting your station down. Just leave us the keys and we'll get someone else to do the work" (most likely they'll get some poor sucker for less pay). I do not see why these oil companies must force these station owners to give up their own profits to them. Station owners need to make a living too!

Today, I'm spending my memorial day at the valley where my family grew up. I'm spending time there among people who've been friends of my family. But most of all, we will be remembering those that have served in the military and fought for our country, even those who worked in the support groups as well.

As we head into the summer season, there will be deaf days at amusement parks. There will be some deaf conferences (bible or whatever related stuff) will be going on. The most important will be NTID's 40 Reunion event to happen. (don't forget, alumni, that you have till June 1st to register for the reunion! That's exactly one week from today!! ). It's practically 30 days (one month) to the reunion day now. Wow, time goes fast.

Whatever you plan to do, make sure you make your trip count and the dollar spent wisely.
I hope you will enjoy the unofficial start to summer. For me, I think after the valley, I'll enjoy my back yard again.

Economic Meltdown already?

G'day Everyone!

You get a fair warning. It's a political rant day. Good yer warned.

I was just watching CNN this morning before I took off for DC for the Funeral of my friend, I was listening to their rant about the gas prices. My eyes grew wide and I rushed to have a quick slug of coffee (I haven't had any yet!).

Hearing the CNN Headline News say if the price of an oil barrel goes up:
$ 150/barrel= $4.50/gallon at the pump.
$200/barrel= $6.00/gallon at the pump.

I was like: My gravies, what's the hell going on with the Arabs? Which translates to the political field: What's our President Bush going to do? Will he start production to start finding oil in our backyard lands (like Alaska) and other possible oil fields within the USA? I hope so. We'd be battling the environmentalists that want to preserve nature. But that's a tough draw of a deal when we in an economic mess already.

I was looking in my old files and I found my previous post I wrote: http://thedeafsherlock.blogspot.com/2007/11/big-money-to-oil-companies-little-for.html

Some of you didn't think we'd be in this situation 6 months ago. What do you see now?
Sadly to say, I am concerned at a time of how things are going to happen.
How many people are actually going to come to the NTID 40th reunion? Will it be the LAST reunion at it's best? The price of gas throws the 45th, 50th, etc. reunions into a murky future question.
The cost of college is going to go up because of dorm heating, food, etc.
The price of food is going to go up more.

And you know what? When many of the job seekers are trying to find jobs these days, you are going to find more people at the bus stop, at the train/subway station, and those trying to carpool. While it may be a windfall for the transportation systems, the cost of the ride could go up as well. Even now, several friends of mine have told me that various company employees are scrambling to move to prime housing that sits on major bus lines and subway/train lines. The reason: The less that they have to drive their car to work, they can take a little walk to the bus and train/subway line areas.

Even I, as a job seeker, am prospectively looking for a job that sits right on the bus line as well. But I don't mind a walk either!!

If the gas prices do change the commuter driving habits, maybe the rush hour will be less congested if people realize how things are now.

You know what? When Congress had the Bil Oil Executives on the hill to DEFEND why these Oil companies have such HUGE profits in an economic time when they shouldn't be. One oil exec said: "A huge profit now will help our company to get through the rough economic days later".
I laughed and said "yeah, right. The more the gas prices go higher, the MORE money YOU GUYS (Oil Exec) will be putting in your secret accounts!". I was disgusted because nothing wasn't accomplished in congress.

I don't know how bad things will get to be, but the last few months for President Bush in his term looks politically bad for him. For Obama and Hillary, who ever wins, their first 100 days will be the toughest ones that no president has ever faced.

Some of my friends have mocked me in the past and said, "you should run for the White House". I rather give them a serious look of my face and tell them: "NOT ON YOUR LIFE!". I do not want to be in that position there that makes decisions that affect the rest of this nation/world.

As I said before, some of us are going to have to go back to the bicycle. Some of us are going to be having to pre-pay for gas because drive offs or gas stealing will increase more often. It's going to be more important that we be careful where we walk at times because these economic days will drive people to commit crimes to steal from others (that is being mugged and it's possible you can be killed while being mugged).

Just the same, I'm making my trips with my car count. But, gone are the good days. What the future holds for this world? Turn to the Word of God (or whatever faith based book you have) and you will see it unfold.

Ok, I'm done with my rant. Micah can take over on that in his own blog.

till next time, I won't say semper fi. Just have a happy and SAFE memorial day weekend.
amen.

Update:

I had to add in a post rant.

As I was driving today, I was thinking about President Bush's Economic Stimulus plan. Suddenly, it hit me very clearly. It won't be an economic stimulus plan. Spending that extra $$$ money will just go right into the gas tank and thus creating another profitable day for the oil companies! Perfect plan? No. Bush may have the right idea, but the timing is so wrong, it's going to be hard to revive the economy at this point.

Could we be watching an economic meltdown starting to happen? I don't know. The way this world is going now, almost anything can happen.

I'm hope that I can save my "economic stimulus check for one reason. It will be a gift for my mom. Home heating oil will be going up so bad, that one full tank of heating oil will cost about $1000 this season. (that's no joke, our oil company warned us in a letter to encourage clients to save money as much as possible.).

How bad will things get? I don't want to know. But again, rough months lay ahead for Bushie boy.

Ohlone College Breaks Ties with NTID!

G'day Everyone!

In what has been termed the latest shot fired across the NTID bow over the name of the Tower B dorm of NTID has begun.

Ohlone College has broken away from being one a supporter of the NTID Community and coming out against the Alexander Graham Bell's name on the dorm.

For facts of the reasons why:
http://orangebrownrit.blogspot.com/2008/05/letter-from-faculty-of-center-for-deaf.html

also:
Letter from NTID Student Congress to Alan Hurwitz:
http://orangebrownrit.blogspot.com/2008/05/nsc-presidents-letter-to-dr-hurwitz.html

In everything: The attention is now gathering with steam. If RIT President Destiler (sp) should start listening to the NTID community, he should listen very carefully. NTID may be one of the many colleges of RIT, but it's Alan Hurwitz that needs to listen way carefully as well.

I'm hopeful that we will have a good gathering during the NTID 40th Reunion which involves the discussion of the Bell Hall name and it's required removal.

I'm asking many of the current NTID students and Alumni to please think of WHO should be honored and come with questions for discussion in June at the reunion!!

Remember: You must register for the reunion by June 1st, 2008! Don't delay!
Also: Many of the hotels in Rochester are filling up fast. If there's room left in the dorm, register for it.

Be ready. If we have to protest at the reunion, we will remain a PEACEFUL PROTEST. Got it? Good. See you in June. And stay watching on the Orange and Brown Coalition Blog for more info! This is going to get SERIOUS!

Protesting the dorm name at NTID!

G'day Everyone!

How long has it been for NTID to have this awful name on Tower B for so many years? How long has NTID (National Technical Institute for the Deaf (had to say it for the hearing audience out there) ) on the campus of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) known for many years that Alexander Graham Bell has never been a supporter for the Deaf Community?

Who, with a shriveled conscience of their soul, would allow a name like A.G.Bell be put on the name of a dorm of the young, then, college of NTID? Would it not be years later that the truth of A.G. Bell float to the surface and finally to be found that A.G. Bell is not for what he is, nor is his existing organization in support of the deaf community. It;s like hiding a explosive issue that is designed to hit to the surface in the years later which is at the present time now. Bad Idea!

When students of NTID presented a petition to have the A.G. Bell removed off the Tower B, Mr. Hurwitz responded to set up a commission.

Later, Hurwitz responded that the dorm name would not be removed, but the plaque would be taken down and rephrased to say more clearly about A.G.Bell's work.
Here's what was said by Hurwitz personally:
http://orangebrownrit.blogspot.com/2008/05/ntid-president-reaches-decision-on-bell.html

Here's the website that shows the plaque in Bell hall, just in side the lobby area. Read it carefully:
http://www.ythree.com/?p=150

The decision has prompted an out burst from the NTID Deaf Community.
Three blogs have said something things very clearly:
http://orangebrownrit.blogspot.com/2008/05/ntid-facstaff-responses-re-decision.html

http://deafadvocate.blogspot.com/2008/05/ntid-mocks-deaf-community-by-keeping.html

http://orangebrownrit.blogspot.com/2008/05/dsnc-signature-of-ag-bells-nameplaque.html

Having this Bell Hall controversy happening now, just before the 40th NTID reunion happens in a month time is very unfortunate for NTID.

This should be a wake-up call for ALL NTID ALUMNI to come to the NTID 40 Reunion .
This should also be an opportunity for RIT President Destiler (sp) to come to the reunion and sit down the current NTID students and Alumni and talk about the Bell hall. It would be important for President Alan Hurwitz to also come and sit down as well before he takes the oath of his new office. If he fails to budge on his decision about the Bell hall name, it could have an impact on future students coming to NTID.

Why should a major deaf college honors someone one who wanted to destroy the Deaf Community because that person believed that Sign Language wasn't a recognizable language? The same type of his name-sake organization that promotes sign language for hearing babies and cochlear implants with no sign language for deaf babies. How does this reflect NTID that wants to teach and train deaf people people to be hard working deaf professionals?
I wouldn't want to live in a dorm that was named for someone who was out to destroy the deaf community so long time ago.

In saying this, I'm all for having the name: "The Alexander Graham Bell Hall" to come off tower B and put into the dust bin of deaf history.

I say Tower B should be renamed to "Dr. William Castle Hall" on tower B. Dr. Castle was our first director of NTID. His efforts should not go unrecognized for his major contributions that he has done to lay the foundations for what NTID is today.

An honor for a dorm name should go to a person who makes a direct contribution to the deaf community. But that "contribution" should not be just for money to have the name put on a dorm (as some colleges do to promote the benefactor). A. G. Bell wasn't a benefactor. He was a person against the deaf community. His name shouldn't be on any dorm, much less on his own organization's building.

So listen closely (Alan Hurwitz) to the heart of the NTID and it's deaf community: Take down the name of A.G.Bell off tower B dorm!!

Semper Fi!

Update: A discussion is going on with some of the NTID community and Alumni. I do believe that we should be having a general discussion and a debate about the Tower B dorm name at the 40th reunion.

Also, I'm backpedaling (withdrawing) the nomination of the name: William B. Castle after a person pointed it out in the comments about his actions during his years in NTID previously as a director. In sense, Dr. Castle should have never allowed Bell's name on the dorm. Even if it was good intentions.

But we, the NTID Deaf Community and Alumni need to come up with names of honorable people who DO deserve to be named on the dorm. Keep those ideas flowing!

But one thing: Don't name I. King Jordan on it! He's already got his name on the Student Academic Center. That's enough for him.

Personal Post: Random thoughts.

G'day Everyone.

It's the middle of the week and it's should be called "over the hill of the week" day. We all should be looking forward to the coming 3 day off weekend which is Memorial day week. That is the day when the local community pools open and people are camping. BBQs fire up and good food is cooking.

But, not everyone will be in that mood. Some of us will be attending a funeral. People still die around us every day. It's a somber and sad moment in our lives.

To me, my old NTID group has just gotten smaller by 2 missing. First, James Sharer passed away unexpectedly. Now, Harold Tritt is gone. It's like losing a friend of the "family". In June, at the NTID 40th Reunion, my friends and I will be having a little memorial service to our friends who have passed from us. It's the least we can do to remember our friends.

Harold has touched the lives of many people with his teasing around and being one of the friendliest deaf people you'd want to know. The last 5 months of his life has been some of his roughest days he's had to endure. To hear him pass away is like to hear sad news that he's come to an end in his sleep in the early morning hours of May 18, 2008. Many of us would say, he's

This weekend should be a happy time for all of us to praise and pray and remember those who died in the service of our country. The military men and women who gave their lives are the ones we should be honoring and remembering. But just like all of us, their families will also be sad and mourn as well. Remember to thank the military personnel who fight to protect our nation on a daily basis.

May all of you have a SAFE and enjoyable weekend of this Memorial day.
And if you do go driving instead of flying or taking the amtrak, please use some common sense on the road. Police will be out in force to try to catch drunk drivers and speeders.

For now, Semper FI to Memorial day 2008.

Amusement Park Prevents BLIND Teen from riding the new coaster.

G'day Everyone!

A friend of mine, Paul Ealy, picked up on an article that became an interest to me very much.

Here's the link: http://yourerie.com/content/fulltext/?cid=8423

Let me break it down for you. We have a 19 year old BLIND teenager, Kelly McCammon that has just rode the new Waldameer Amusement Park newest roller coaster, Ravine Flyer II, at least 3 times! The Park's owner stepped in and said "you can't ride the rides because you are BLIND".

I'd like to tell this Waldameer Amusement Park owner that he's dead wrong.

Fact one: Kelly had assistance of his friends to help him to ride on the roller coasters.
Fact two: Kelly wasn't asking for special assistance and/or treatments
Face three: He wants to be treated just like any other normal rider.

Given that being said, I was appalled by what the park owner said in his latter comments of this article: "with some rides we have the manufactures come out and say you can't do it...the coaster is one of those rides that is really bad...in that... there are certain forces against you if you don't know what's coming up and you don't have yourself braced for it you could be in trouble." - Paul Nelson, Waldameer Park

I say " excuse me, you as a park owner permit to build a roller coaster and then say you have to prevent the disabled public from riding a specific roller coaster ? Are you prepared for a lawsuit from the disabled community?"

You know what? I'm ashamed for amusement parks that put in place special policies and procedures for visitors with "special needs". That is to say "oh please stop by our office, sign some forms so that you can't sue us if you get injured on a ride in our park". I can understand that amusement parks want to protect the handicapped people. But this is out of line.

We, the disabled community, (and I say this in favor of all types of disabled people), resent special treatment. I know that there are some of us with special conditions that can't ride a certain ride. But you know what? Roller coaster manufactures and builders have better start taking an interest in the disabled community and to be careful of what they build. If they come out and build a product that strictly for the abled-bodied community and telling a park owner to regulate that ride is like having a chance for a park owner to go out of business once the legal community gets involved and obtains a court order that says "Tear it down and build a ride that all people can enjoy of!".

I'm deaf and I have ridden several roller coasters in my life, even the most fastest ones on earth. I have a deaf blind friend of mine who's proud to have ridden on a roller coaster as well. I have a friend in a wheel chair (most times he walks around with a cane) and he has ridden on a roller coaster as well. Know what? We eschew the handicapped entrance. We want to wait in line, just like an average JOE PUBLIC! (like everyone else!). We don't ask to be at the seated first or put into a seat made "for disabled riders only" area. It's an insult.

If amusement parks are using "Deaf awareness day" to identify who's disabled and who's not, then that's a type of discrimination that we need not to see. Deaf awareness day should be a fun day for the public to get to know the deaf community and the disabled community as well.

Amusement parks are places to relax and enjoy a day off from this stress filled world that goes on every day. But to hear something that they try to rule us in the name of "Safety", then it's going to be a sad day when the paying public avoids some certain parks because of over zealous rules.

For McCammon and the National Federation for the Blind, I hope your efforts to fight the park rules will make it better for other disabled people to enjoy that park!

Salute and Semper FI to you!

Personal post : In Memory of Harold J. Tritt.

G'day Everyone.

In what has been a wonderful day for me in going out to be with my friend all day, it wasn't until this evening of May 18th, 2008 that I got a short message text on my phone. I got informed a friend of mine passed away in the early morning hours of today.

When I came home tonight, I found out and got shocked of hearing about my old NTID friend, Harold J. Tritt, passing away in a DC hospital. Harold Tritt has been very sick for a long while and I have asked and do thank many of the friends who have prayed for him.

An article will appear in the Washington Post obituary (Deceased Notices) and most likely in an independent Maryland newspaper with-in the next few days.

Right now, his wife and children are being comforted in their loss. I specifically ask that if anyone knows the Tritts to please not IM, or e-mail, or VP the Tritt family for the next few days. They will be contacting the very people they need to see and need to have time for themselves.
But I would most likely ask that you pray for Harold Tritts family that they get through this rough time in their lives.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced in a future Washington Post Obituary and on here.

It is rough to understand to know that I just lost a good friend of mine. Harold was part of my group of friends that I've had in my NTID days. He was a loyal friend of mine. I had been praying that he would recover from his long hospital illness, But God knows this and this was HIS plan to see this happen. Again, Please pray for the Tritts family.

Thanks so much.

Sincerely,
Steve Baier
Sherlock Steve.

Sorry for date blooper.. fix it. (thanks James.)

Calif High Court Decision.

G'day Everyone!

One of the big day surprises is Ellen DeGeneres announcement that she would be married to her lover. http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/TV/05/16/ellen.degeneres.marriage.ap/index.html

While the gay and lesbian community is happy that gay marriage is happening in the near future of the "GOLD" state, there is still a possibility that a November state ballot will have the Calif voters to make an amendment to the Calif State Constitution that says " Marriage is reserved ONLY for Man and Woman". Would it pass the court muster and tie the hands of judges by the voters? Maybe, maybe not.

To me, I have appreciated some several gay and lesbian friends who have been "married" and they are enjoying the new status of life. But to me, I think civil unions is more correct to have. The benefits of "marriage" still happens. You still are 'married' but you commit to each other.
Other wise, how many states would actually support the act of divorce of gay marriage when the states don't recognize gay marriage? (If you got married in Massachusetts, then you have to be divorced in Massachusetts. Good luck!).

Will the Calif High Court Decision influence the rest of the rest of the nation to pass gay marriage in every state? I don't know. What happens in Calif usually spreads across the nation. (just like the 4 dollar gas spike starting there and spreading East ward already. Is 5 dollar gas spike next? HOPE NOT!).

So Ellen DeGeneres, wish you luck in your "marriage".

P.S. to few friends at GU: Congratulations to you! May you enjoy the day!

Salute to the Gallaudet Grads of 2008!, NTID 40th reminder, $4 gas.

G'day Everyone!

A whole academic year has flown by and now it's graduation time again at Gallaudet University! Please SALUTE these hard working students who have earned the right to host their undergraduate and graduate degrees in a PROUD BISON TRADITION!

Today, there's the graduate hooding ceremony that will be on webcast today.
http://atweb.gallaudet.edu/videoevent/2008/hood2008/Source.asp

The webcast begins at 3:30pm today (2:30 Central, 1:30 Mountain, 12:30 Pacific) being broadcast through www.gallaudet.edu.

Tomorrow, the entire class of 2008 will graduate from Gallaudet University. Semper FI to all of you for a fine job done! Now, I hope and pray that each of you will find a good job in this tough economic time.

Meanwhile, it's nearly 1 month to go for the NTID 40th Reunion! Those who have not yet looked on the NTID reunion page and registered, then here's the direct link to the Reunion registration on-line : https://apps.rit.edu/ntid/alumnireunion/

Please be aware that hotels in the Rochester area, especially near the RIT are being booked completely full as several other events are happening in Rochester, NY. The sooner you register and grab your hotel, the better. YOU MUST REGISTER BEFORE JUNE 1, 2008! (they want a full head count of who's coming!).

Recently in my home town area, the gas price has just spiked to $4.00 a gallon! Sadly to say, a lot of people are in a angry mood and most of the stores that sell gas are installing safety glass as a protection. If it goes up more, I predict a lot of drive offs will happen (that is get the pump authorized, pump gas, then drive off without paying) almost anywhere in the nation. If do a drive off, get a lawyer cuz you'll be without a car for a LONG time. (The law's tough here in PA!)

So, whatever you do this summer, drive carefully, make trips count, and do your best.

Semper FI to you all. Especially to Gallaudet Grads 2008!

Leave that tip please!

G'day Everyone!

I've been busy and I confess, I'm a facebook guy. I enjoy being on that webpage and chatting with people there. Lots of fun! If you are on facebook, look for me! We can chat on there!

Anyhow, time for me to catch up and I've been traveling lately and it's been fun. Time to get back to the blog world again.

Recently, I was made aware of a *FAKE* news article that was written by Deaf Anthology. I got linked to his site and when I went to view it, Deaf Anthology had removed it. But thanks to Deaf Anthology for a bit in his scheme of things. He's given me a topic to write today for all of us.

I've done a lot of traveling in my life and have meet up with my share of hearing wait staff in a restaurant. Some times, these wait staff appreciate that I'm hearing impaired and can talk well. But often when I don't know their voice well, we sometimes resort to pen/paper communication. Works well.

I've sat down with managers and owners and some ask me: "Why doesn't the deaf community leave a tip for my wait staff when we serve them some of our best food?". Here I am, put on the spot and defending a local deaf community in front of the manager and his wait staff. How can a few *bad apples* make a bad reflection upon the deaf community about the tips?

Let's talk about tips. When you go to a restaurant, the server is doing her best to treat you to fine service and presentation of food as she would to a hearing customer. That is from the moment you sit down to the moment you are handed the check. The tip is more like a "Thank You money" that you leave on the table for the server. The larger the tip means you gave them a hefty praise. The smaller tip means you were satisfied. But leaving NO TIP? uh oh, that means you have just declared to the server : "You gave me bad service. therefore, no tip!".

It's important to leave a tip for the server. Why? Most restaurants (with the exception of fast food places) don't pay their employees a full pay rate. Employees depend on the tips from their customers since they're not paid enough. So, if you happen to be in restaurant, and you don't see a "Please do not tip" sign up, please be respectful of the wait staff. Tip your server of at least 15% of your bill. That's leaving a THANK YOU tip on the table. (what I mean is, you still have to pay your check in full, but you are leaving money for the server). If you happen to be a real fancy restaurant, leave a 20% tip. It's a custom. It's the right thing to do.

Now, back to sitting down with managers and owners. When I get asked why some deaf people don't bother to leave a tip at a restaurant table, I hate being put on the spot. I explain that there are some deaf people in the community that don't know the art of tipping in the restaurant that well.

I try to tell managers clearly, especially when I'm on a trip, that I don't know the type of the local deaf community they have, but I explain that they should not treat all deaf people in the same position as being non-tippers. We like to be treated with respect. But those bad apples, who don't tip at all, make the rest of us look bad!

I've gone to several restaurants in DC and in my home area where I am known enough by the wait staff that I will tip and I tip very well! When you get known that you tip well, you know that the wait staff will provide you with excellent service. I've even come to know some wait staff as hearing friends of mine as well.

So, when you go to a restaurant for a nice dinner, please remember to tip. If your friends don't put their own tip down (especially when you split a check), put it down for them because their actions make a bad impression on everyone else. You can tell them later that they can either pay you back for their share of the tip or you can tell them " no tip means no going to a restaurant with me again!".

I hope you will treat the server with respect. They work hard every day for the tips. They're always grateful for a little extra money.

So to all those in the food service industry out there, I salute you!
Keep making those wonderful foods!

SEMPER FI!

Fear and Concern in Phildelphia, PA.

G'day Everyone!

In Philadelphia, PA, it is a city on edge right now, even among the deaf community. In what has happened recently in the news about 3 cop shooting suspects that there arrested and beaten quite badly. The news has been showing a certain footage of the beating that makes Rodney King's arrest look badly as a kid long ago.

It's been said that Philadelphia is on edge because they're trying to solve the situation but not sure how good it will be of pulling the "suspected" involved cops off the beats and on to the desk jobs. I would rather that Philadelphia Police department do one better. Suspend them from the force, take their guns, badges, uniforms, and police identification and put them on a immediate leave till the situation gets solved out. They also ought to retain lawyers too.

It's really not a good situation as it is. NYPD recently won a court case in the Sean Bell shooting case in which their cops were found NOT GUILTY. I'm pretty sure the judge in that case is having 2nd thoughts and wishing it was a jury trial to resolve that. But as it stands there, the Federal Government is doing a civil rights probe into the Sean Bell case. And one should remind the NYPD that nobody won anything. Sean Bell is dead and those responsible for shooting are still walking free.

How bad will the Philadelphia situation get? I can only tell you that it's no longer the city of "Brotherly Love" , but the City of Broken Hearts.

I can understand an entire police department that struck hard and putting the shooting suspects in the hospital because some of their own officers are dead or hurt. Cops taking revenge just because one of their own is hurt isn't justice, but it shows the stress of the job. My hope is that Philadelphia will put ALL OF THEIR POLICE OFFICERS into mandatory mental health care counseling every 6 months, starting immediately. A situation for an arrest and beating shouldn't be happening like that.

Pray for the City of Brotherly Love. Let's hope God knocks some sense into these cops. They need it!

Semper FI.

Death of the DC Madam!

G'day everyone!

I was kind of surprised at the death of the infamous "DC Madam". The woman behind the infamous DC Call Girl ring that served many of the most powerful and political people. As the news on CNN tv and CNN.com comes around, there are also several web sites that have been popping up about the DC Madam. The biggest question is, did she instruct a friend to release the names of her infamous black book and post it some where after she dies? That would give a rise to "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned from the dead". Whatever happened to her, questions will be abound and who knows what will become of all her "clients". In sense, she robbed the justice dept and the judge of the joy of sending her to prison.

Some times, I think our government is going after prostitution rings outside of Nevada so much, one has to ask if it's time to shut down the legal whorehouses in Nevada? The government can prosecute every woman that runs an escort service, but what about all the men that engage in their services? I think it's time that the government starts to consider something.

When I think back to poor Eliot Spritzer, the ex-governor of NY, it makes me wonder how Eliot could brag every day in his law enforcement life that he was bringing down every escort services that he wanted to prosecute, and yet he had his own little "private escort" that would undo his political future.
So whatever motivated the DC madam to take her life, she knew what she was doing. God rest her soul.

And as the weekend comes up, I'm just celebrating another year, alone. *sigh* I wish I could head down to DC and enjoy the DPHH weekend. But going to be content and maybe win a little money if they got BINGO. Life goes on.

Iron man: the movie, starts today!
Free comic book day: SATURDAY!

FYI to NTID Alumni: We are ONE MONTH away from the NTID 40th REUNION! Remember, your registration needs to be postmarked before JUNE 1st! For info: www.ntid.rit.edu/alumni . It's worth the cost of gas to come to the reunion because it's only once every 5 years! See you there!

Have a great SEMPER FI weekend!

May 1st, 2008: What day is it?

G'day everyone!

Today's May 1st, 2008.

So what kind of a day should it be called?

Some people said it should be May Day in which Russia shows off it's military might to it's people and reminds the world that are still a "STRONG" nation.

I like what I heard on CNN (TV) during a broadcast time at noon in which they said "It should be called National LAW DAY because they were celebrating of just how good all our laws are in the USA".

Today it's also CINO de Mayo as well. (ah Mexican party time!).

It's also the 2nd anniversary of the start of the Gallaudet Unity REVOLUTION in which the students took to the gates to protest the Board of Trustees decision in the selection of Jane Fernandes. It would be a few days later that we'd see Tent City I to show up on campus.

But the one thing I really disagree of today being called "Immigration day". It's a massive celebration of which every illegal person comes crawling out of the woodwork, taunts police and puts on a show of demonstration that asks "change the laws, let the illegals here now become citizen!!". Even some cities are doing 'safe haven' for these illegal immigrants.

It's a shame. It's taunting to all the LEGAL Immigrants that CHOOSE to follow the law and come to USA to be a LEGAL CITIZEN. How does it really look when you look at an illegal citizen that takes our nations flag and wraps it around their body and wears it like a cloak and says out loud: "LOOK AT ME! I am LIBERTY DRESSED IN THE FLAG OF THIS NATION THAT I CLAIM IN THE NAME OF MY NATURAL COUNTRY: MEXICO!". Every natural citizen of the USA would love to run down that person, grab that flag, punch the person, and then burn the flag because it has been desecrated!

It wasn't too long ago when a I saw a photograph that had a Mexican flag on top and our USA flag flying upside down! I was so angry, I spat nails!!

What happens when one day a major terrorist event hits this nation again? If that terrorist event does happen again, you know what? I would encourage home land security to round up every illegal immigrant and question them. But that would cause every illegal immigrant to run for the border as fast as they could go. Trying to get away from something they didn't do. But they'd get rounded up no matter what.

In fact I support Homeland Security that carries out Immigration raids in various places. Capturing illegals and processing them and shipping them far into Mexico where they are told NOT TO COME BACK. To those that work in Homeland Security: KEEP AFTER THE ILLEGALS AND KEEP OUR COUNTRY SAFE!!

What happened to people coming to this nation in to become a citizen in a safe and sane way? The grass is never green here in USA. Nor is it not in Mexico or Canada either!

No matter how you look at May 1st, 2008 and declare whatever this day to be for whatever what group you represent, it will never be that day for you. To many of us, it'll just be another normal spring day passing on.

And FYI to many comic book fans: SATURDAY, MAY 3rd, 2008 is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!
Check out this webpage: http://www.freecomicbookday.com/ and be sure to find your nearest comic book store near you and get your FREE COMIC BOOKS! (yes, Virginia, there are still some FREE things in life!).

Don't forget: TOMORROW, new movie: IRON MAN leaps off the pages of Marvel Comic books!

and still on tap to come: Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull! whoa, sig heil to the Nazis again? *sigh* yo ho to 1940s we go! Coming May 22, 2008!

So, tomorrow's first Friday and to all the deaf in DC area: Have a great DPHH Friday!

Super SEMPER FI to everyone! Happy May 1st!
