What shocks me the most is that the AG Bell plate has been "recycled" (which is a better term for being melted down) and destroyed. I'm really surprised that NTID President Alan Hurwitz would report it's final disposition of the AG Bell plate.
I don't think ANYONE in the NTID Alumni Community wanted to see that Plaque destroyed. I don't think that was the intention of the discussion. We wanted the name and plaque removed from the dorm, but not destroyed. It would have been a right idea to keep the plaque and preserve it as a history of our deaf culture.
Though at this point, the former bell hall is now renamed back to NTID Residence Hall 50C. It will have to take a big name DEAF person to make a HUGE Donation to his/her name on the dorm. How soon will that happen? Who knows?
Lately, I read that OJ Simpson has finally been given a term of more than 33 years to life in prison. But it makes me wonder if the judge was just doing that type of a decision make up for the last trial in which OJ Simpson was found NOT GUILTY. I doubt that OJ Simpson will survive prison very long. Justice served? I don't think so. Because OJ still needs face the final one when he dies. That'll be life's justice then.

I was surprised at your reaction to the destruction of the plaque honoring Dr. Alexander Graham Bell at NTID. I thought that you would advocate the destruction but it turned out that I was very wrong.
I applaud you for being judicious. Without doubt, you will be harshly criticized or attacked for expressing your feeling on the destruction of the plague. I, for one, have mixed feelings about it and think that the destruction was not the wise way to do. Since it is already done, there is no point in reversing it and all that is left is the opinions about it.

NTID President Alan Hurwitz may decided not to have the plaque of AGBell to be preserved as a history piece of our Deaf culture anymore than the people would preserve anything such as a plaque presenting Adolf Hilter as part of the history for their Jewish culture.
Some people think that we should destroy the Volta Bureau Building in Washington DC for they gave millions of dollars to A.G. Bell Association for the Deaf to promote monolingualism, the oral only method philosophy that destroyed thousands of Deaf people's right to bilingualism with ASL and English for over 100 years and still do it today with AVT, Auditory Verbal Therapy organization.
I praise NTID President Alan Hurwitz destroying the plaque because it is an eugenic plaque, a deficit thinking ideology plaque that destroyed thousands, if not millions of Deaf people's natural language, American Sign Language since 1880!

Joe and John: I thought I would comment to you both. When I came up to the 40th reunion at NTID, just about everyone has talked to President Hurwitz. Everyone else, as I have, felt that the plate would come down and then we'd have a discussion on what it's disposition should be.
At one point, I would have advocated that it should be turned over to the AG Bell group as a sign of RESPECT to them.
It surprises me that they (AG Bell Group) haven't put on much of a defense for the name or for plaque in the first place since they were doing a lot of infighting with the DBC.
Since now it's destroyed, what kind of message does NTID send to the AG Bell group? That's what I'm concerned about.
Joe, I appreciate the fact that you do warn me of being judged and attacked for my stance about the AG Bell plaque. I've been attacked of wanting to support the group that wanted the AG BELL name off the dorm. Of course, attacked when the victory came. But now this? *sigh* I guess Hurwitz made a blooper when he should have asked of what should be done with the plaque.
I want to make a comment on OJ Simpson. Once a criminal is always a criminal. You know OJ Simpson says he would hired a detective one time to look for the person who killed Nicholde Simpson and Ron Goldman yet he never did prove otherwise. So now he committed the crime in Las Vegas. If he wanted to avoid jail in Las Vegas, he should have called the Police about the situation instead of taking the situation in his own hands. So he didn't call the Police and commit the crime. Now he deserves to go to Jail. I really think he should do the maximum jail because saying "Sorry" will never change the crime he did. Saying "Sorry" is not a Get of Jail Pass to go play Golf. I hope he loses his appeals because he took the law in his own hands to commit the crime. Yes, he did say he did a stupid thing but he didn't stop before he did the crime. I wish him luck in Jail.

im not following ur logic in wanting AG Bell Association to get the plaque - the plaque reads as:
“The Alexander Graham Bell Building
Only six years before his death, Alexander Graham Bell looked back over his amazing life and wrote: “Recognition of my work for and interest in the education of the deaf has always been more pleasing to me than even recognition of my work with the telephone.”
A brillant and innovative teacher of the deaf, Bell dedicated a great portion of his life to help deaf children develop their potential for listening, speaking, and lipreading.
Today, NTID emulates the ideals for which Alexander Graham Bell worked.”
The community indicated that they disagreed with this plaque -that NTID does not emulate Bell's ideals so why should we want this plaque to remain in existence

I don't think that AGBell deserve any RESPECT at all!
Since 1880, tens of thousands of Deaf people's life have been deprived of their natural language that was taken away, the American Sign Language and forced monolingualism philosophy upon all Deaf children's education system.
Do you realize that Alexander Graham Bell Association only have 9% deaf membership while 53% of the members are medical professional hearing people?
We gotta stop being so gullible about the integrity of AGBell and stop assuming that they, AGBell have the morality concerns for Deaf babies and children in schools. AGB's middle name is Greed!

I am in total agreement with you about such unncessary action of destroying or melting the AGB plaque as part of our deaf history.
I am deeply involved with the historical preservance organizations.
John Ebgert and others had good points about the comparsion of Adolf Hitler and AGB's evil doings.
The Allied forces during the WWII. They done the first thing was to get rid of any existing Nazi symbols on German buildings and other intrafrasctures.
So the battered Germany could have the new chapter in her own country than pre-occupying with the historical preservance of any evil reminders.
The city of Berlin recently put the concrete in the former Adolf Hilter's bunker during his last days and destroyed many Nazi-inspired artworks within the bunker few years ago.
I would be surely upset about destroying any human civilization remains, but we sometimes have to turn the new chapter in our humanity.
Ironically, Dr. Alan Hurtwiz and other former oralists are more and more resentful of the AGB (AGBAD) than culturally deaf individuals like me. Why??????????
When I seen the newsreel film of the Nazi symbols being destroyed as a kid. I was much relieved to see the evils of Nazism being confronted in that kind of way.
I read somewhere about the real controvesty about the Nazi symbols still remained in several German churches.
John Ebgert is absolutely right about the AGB (AGBAD) is all about "greed", not save us from crutches of our so-called disability.
Many West Virginians during the early 1960s were very shocked to learn that they were really economically poor during the 1960 presidential campaign.
One of the West Virginia people quote "I never know that I am really poor myself".
Before the anti-poverty federal programs poured in the state of West Virginia. Guess what?
More and more West Virginians get obsese, diabetes and heart diseases than ever.
Of course, many West Virginians are real idiotic for voting McCain and Bush II during the presidential election.
At least, the state of West Virginia is in good finanical shape unlike many states across the United States. West Virginia have the budget surplus and still calls for the across-the-board spending cuts anyway for the future economic forecast.
Why didn't the AGB offer to take up the plaque and pay for the shipping cost in the first place?
